ABOUT
Bob, originally from Bristol, England, now resides on the shores of New Zealand in Christchurch. He balances his full-time job as a Geotechnical Project Engineer with his passion for art and painting . Bob's life by the coast has profoundly influenced his creative expression, especially during his years working internationally as a scuba diver. The fishy themes in his paintings reflect the vibrant life of the shore and the deep connection he feels to the ocean and the coast.
Through his paintings, Bob aims to share the joy and depth he finds in the world around him through interesting subjects and mindful colour pallets, inviting viewers to experience his artistic process and the materials he uses.
Bobs creativity is shaped by extensive travels and experiences. His choice of materials and techniques is inspired by time spent painting graffiti and art on walls and concrete canvases, learning and finding inspiration with friends along the way.
Bob is inspired by artists with a keen eye for colour and composition—from Renaissance masters in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, to stone-carved figures woven into Gaudí’s architecture in Barcelona, to the raw, rugged graffiti styles found in the streets of Bristol, Lisbon and Reykjavík.
INSPIRATION
Linwood Gallery :
"Smoked Mackerel" and "Orange Roughy" by Bob Tyler in "First Steps 2025," on now at Eastside Gallery until 26 April.
Bob enjoys working on large canvases, blending acrylics, oils and pastels while experimenting with colour, texture, and form. His paintings often begin with a fish head and evolve from there - sometimes with careful detail and refined colour choices, other times with bold, exaggerated figures and unconventional, almost awkward perspectives. He is inspired by harmonious colour pallets and simple form with precision but also enjoys a more playful, experimental approach. His work moves between control and spontaneity, allowing each piece to develop naturally.
Location: Eastside Gallery, 388 Worcester St, Christchurch,

Bob Tyler with his Smoked mackerel; a still life painting whose subject acknowledges the potential of its shallow sense of space. His Smoked Mackerel asserting their presence in the gallery’s space with the measured rhythm and warmth of Tyler’s colours, as rich as they are measured, warm and respectful of their subject.
